Not JUST “a diamond ring,” this diamond ring just so happens to be the former Krupp Diamond, a magnificent 33 carat Asscher cut! Described by Christie’s, this diamond is “a cut-cornered rectangular-cut diamond, weighing approximately 33.19 carats.” Set in a ring, the diamond was “flanked on either side by a tapered baguette-cut diamond, mounted in platinum. With report 1132411262 dated 9 May 2011 from the Gemological Institute of America stating that the diamond is D color, VS1 clarity; accompanied by a working diagram indicating that the clarity may be potentially internally flawless.”

So not only was it more than likely internally flawless when Taylor first acquired the ring, it is still potential internally flawless with minor recutting. With 19 points over 33 carats, a VS1 “potential” inclusion could more than likely be removed and keep the Asscher cut easily above the 33 carat mark. Buying this diamond was a brilliant move by someone who really knows their diamonds.

The estimated sale price was set at $3,500,000, and sold for more than double, as the Krupp/Taylor diamond ring was sold for $8,818,500! Not bad since all reports show that the diamond ring was sold at Sotheby’s to Richard Burton for just over $300,000 in the late 1960s.

Many jewelry appraisers are listing on their websites that they are USPAP compliant or USPAP certified. USPAP (Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice)are standards developed primarily for real estate appraisers or appraisers performing in a federally regulated transaction. USPAP is a minimal standard "checklist" with no explanation of the meaning of the checklist. Jewelry appraisers may be using this "credential" to make it appear that they have some "specialized" knowledge, when in fact, it is not a requirement by anyone to be USPAP certified if you appraise jewelry. A consumer should also be aware that a gemologist is not always a qualified appraiser. A qualified gemologist/appraiser has gemology experience as well as valuation and methodology experience. Metro Jewelry Appraisers believes in truth in advertising and truth in credentials.

(IDEX Online News) - A plastic container with $25 million worth of jewels was found in a Paris sewer on Tuesday. Police investigators believe they are part of the jewelry stolen from a Harry Winston boutique in Paris more than two years ago.

The plastic container was set in cement under a home belonging to one of the suspects. Nineteen rings and three pairs of earrings were hidden in the container.

In December 2008, four gunmen, three of them dressed as women, walked into the Harry Winston store just before closing time. With customers in the store and Christmas shoppers passing right outside its door, the four made off with diamonds and diamond jewelry worth an estimated €85 million ($108 million), one of the biggest loots in history.

It was the second time in a year that the store was robbed. After the 2008 theft, secondary insurer Lloyds of London offered a reward of up to $1 million for information leading to the recovery of jewelry.

The French police have already found some of the stolen items when they arrested nine suspects six months after the robbery.

The Larry O'Brien NBA Championship Trophy is no exception AND it is crafted by Tiffany & CO. This glorious trophy is presented to the NBA team that is the winner of the NBA finals. Here are the stats from Wikipedia:
The trophy, made of 14.5 pounds of sterling silver and vermeil with a 24 karat gold overlay, stands two feet tall. It is designed to look like a basketball about to enter a net. The five natural color diamonds in the Olympia Diamond Collection range in size from 1.01 to 2.34 carats.

New York--New York's American Museum of Natural History is extending an exhibit featuring the Olympia Diamond Collection, a set of five vivid natural color diamonds.

Originally, the five-stone exhibit was scheduled to run from September 2009 to February 2010 but, due to its popularity, the diamonds will remain on display until further notice, according to a news release from the owner of the gems, Scarselli Diamonds, a New York-based diamond company known for its expertise in fancy colors. Joshua Sheby, a gemologist with Scarselli Diamonds, curated the Olympia collection.

In the release, Scarselli's Bruno Scarselli noted there have only been two other important museum collections featuring colored diamonds, the Aurora Collection, an introduction into the world of fancy color, and The Splendor of Diamonds exhibit, an interesting display of large diamonds.

"But our exhibit showcases the best of the best, the strongest colors attainable in each color range," he said. "While it might be the rarity and multimillion dollar value of these five gems that attracts people to the museum's Morgan Memorial Hall of Gems, it is the extraordinary beauty of these diamonds that thrills them. We want as many of the museum's four million yearly visitors as possible to have the opportunity to see the collection."

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has graded each diamond in the Olympia collection as "vivid," meaning they all have the highest levels of color saturation possible for colored diamonds.

The collection consists of: a 1.01-carat, vivid orange-yellow diamond; a 1.02-carat, vivid blue-green diamond; a 2.17-carat, vivid purplish-pink diamond; a 2.13-carat, vivid blue diamond; and a 2.34-carat, vivid orange diamond.

Here are excerpts from a great e-mail that I received
from Robert James of The International School of Gemology.
It's a little long...but well worth reading if you buy jewelry on line.

So consumers and buyers, its up to you to protect yourself any time you shop online. Here are five Consumer Questions for Internet Shopping that everyone should ask before making an online purchase. If you cannot answer each with a resounding YES!...then you should not be shopping with that internet seller regardless of where you find them.

Question #1: Does this seller provide you with a physical and verifiable business location including phone and mailing address that you could use if you have a problem?

Question #2: Is this seller Accredited as an online seller by the Better Business Bureau? And remember that BBB logos can be ripped off from various websites. So don’t just look for the logo, visit the BBB website and check out the BBB rating of the business.

Question #3: Does the seller provide you with a full written invoice of your purchase including all pertinent representations made during the item listing? And don’t fall for that old inflated appraisal scam. As we saw from Direct Shopping Network, documents can be created by just about anyone and offered as supporting material to a sale.

Question #4: Does the seller offer a money back return policy that allows you to have your purchase independently verified. And if they do offer that return policy, are they somewhere you can reach if you need to do so? Buying from an unknown seller in Kowloon , China is not going to help you if you get ripped off and need to contact the seller....and you live in Muleshoe , Texas .

Question #5: Have you done research of your own to know what you are looking for? There are massive amounts of information on the internet for just about every gemstone you can think of, so you have to ask yourself if you have done enough research to understand what you are shopping for in order to identify possible scams?

And finally, before you make any purchase you should contact the seller and ask THEM the above five questions and get their answers. See how quickly they answer and ask them additionally if they can provide you with consumer testimonials from previous customers who you can contact to verify.

In short, create yourself a Media Curtain of research and information to help protect yourself any time you shop on the internet for jewelry and gemstones. There are a lot of excellent sellers out on the internet offering unique and wonderful jewelry and gemstones at excellent prices. But there is also the worst bunch of pirates we have ever encountered, and right now China has surpassed Thailand as the pirate capitol of the world of gemstones and jewelry.

As a consumer, your only protection is your own knowledge. There is no entity, government or trade, who is watching over this industry.

No one is watching except you….and us.

"The fine print"...at the very bottom of your appraisal..might say "We assume no liability with respect to any action or inaction that may be taken on the basis of this appraisal." HUH? A report was just written but the appraiser (who could be anyone) assumes no liabilty? You mean that the document is worthless? The information is worthless? You just paid for a worthless document and the appraiser has no confidence in his/her ability to stand behind the information?
So, consumers...take just one minute and review your appraisal documents..and look for "the fine print." Metro stands behind our appraisals AND has confidence in our abilities. U.S. Marshals Service to Auction High-End Jewelry

The U.S. Marshals Service will be auctioning a number of high-end jewelry pieces in its possession. Among the 22 jewelry items are platinum Harry Winston diamond studs and a Damiani turquoise and diamond necklace.

The designer jewelry items were forfeited, according to the U.S. Marshals Service, but additional info about the circumstances was not provided.

The items, some reportedly worth more than $250,000, are currently available for inspection in Cleveland, Ohio.

The online auction will start Friday on bid4assets.com and will end July 18-19.

Platinum and Diamond Skull Sold For $100 Million

Poorly Documented Appraisal=Poor Replacement In The Event of Loss

Sorry....but a hand written appraisal or an appraisal that just details the size, color, and clarity of your diamond is not enough information for proper replacement in the event of loss. It will satisfy most insurance companies but you will be very unhappy with your replacement item. Why? Because a very detailed insurance appraisal will get you the best replacement. There will be no "wiggle room" for the insurance company to replace with an inferior product. So take a moment and review your current appraisal. Does the appraisal tell a detailed story of your item? Do you feel confident that you will get a "similar" replacement based on the information?

What Exactly Do You Do, Anyway??? What Does A Graduate Gemologist Do?

As an independent Graduate Gemologist/Appraiser, I offer independent and unbiased
insurance, estate and other types of appraisals for consumers, trust officers, estate planners, state and federal agencies.

I can help determine the age and provenance of an antique jewelry item through research and careful evaluation of comparable items.

Metro will help you with gem identification, metal content testing, design and construction, quality of gemstones and much more.

It's all about information....

Although I'm not your typical"salesperson" behind the counter, I still have a very
important product to sell to you...it's "information."

I spend most of my waking hours, researching, reading the jewelry industry trade
journals, networking with jewelers nationwide and staying in touch with colored stone and diamond merchants.

I belong to the Polygon Network and get a daily "pulse" of what is happening in the
jewelry industry hour by hour. In addition, I am an e-member of the New York Diamond Dealers Club and IDEX (International Diamond Exchange). These are the "trading floors"
of hundreds of diamond dealers and I am able to get "real time" information which helps me
determine the value of your diamond. Real information, solid information, the very latest information.

Whether it's determining the age of grandma's antique brooch or learning more about "ideal cut" diamonds...information is what Metro is all about.

My name is Jeff Averbook and I'm the President of Metro Jewelry Appraisers. I will offer you insight into the often forgotten jewelry appraisal....looked at for a minute..then stashed in a drawer for the next decade.
Please , please. please...find your appraisal, check the date, read the description, look at the value.
Gold, platinum, and silver are at or near all time highs! If you own a heavy, fancy gold necklace purchased a few years ago...you might be undervalued.
Is the description of your item REALLY descriptive or REALLY vague??
The more detailed information that appears on your appraisal, the better replacement you will receive in the event of a loss.
Is your appraisal value realistic or inflated?
Are you under insured or over insured?

Metro can review your documents, incorporate more descriptive information, provide you with digital photos, and check your values.
